FRIST CENTER FOR THE VISUAL ARTS CALL FOR DOCENTS
Release Date: 5/18/2007

NASHVILLE, TENN.—(May 18, 2007)— The Frist Center for the Visual Arts is currently recruiting volunteers to serve as Weekday Docents, who give exhibition tours primarily to school groups, pre-school through grade 12. Docent candidates need to be available weekdays, most often in the morning. Applications for these volunteer positions will be accepted through July 27, 2007.

Docents are volunteer teachers, or tour guides, who are specially trained to educate and interact with museum visitors about art through the Frist Center’s exhibitions.
The Frist Center strives to stimulate and nourish visitors’ appreciation, understanding, and creativity in the visual arts through a wide-range of educational and entertaining programs for all ages. An integral part of this mission is the Frist Center’s active docent program.

Docents will be selected after a review of applications and brief interviews with members of the Frist Center education department and several active docents. Following general volunteer training in September, docent-specific training will begin the week of Oct. 8, 2007 and continues through March 2008. Docents will receive training in art history and art education practices, in addition to specific touring strategies. All training will take place at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.

Frist Center docents have access to all exhibitions, special volunteer events, continuing education training, and exhibition-specific training, which includes curatorial lectures and previews. All volunteers at the Frist Center receive a discount of 25 percent in the café and 10 percent in the Frist Center gift shop.
